Leadership Development: Sabotage

Leadership Development: Sabotage: If I asked: “How are you undermining your team, business or project?” I’m guessing that your immediate response to that question is “I’m not!”. Swiftly followed by a ‘Why would I do that?”

.
You’d be surprised at the potholes we can create for ourselves. And, as we self-sabotage, we roll that right out into those endeavours and indeed people that we care about, especially those we REALLY care about!
Taking a peek into local business with my leadership coach hat on, I have seen a myriad of things. Mostly, these small, creative, alternative, innovative, vivacious businesses have a brilliant future, if only they could get out of their own way.
.
One of the primary behaviours that I see is this. A small, passion-led business consuming of one or two individuals is fine and functional and delicious and juicy. It is BUSINESS GROWTH that spotlights the difficulty. Where a couple of passionate individuals can keep a business ticking over for years. They might get tired but the very engagement itself is enough to feed the feel-good loop.
.
Growing a business = engagement of more people. And that means LETTING GO!

Leadership Development: Sabotage

The letting go appears to be a real difficulty and I do understand that.
When it’s your baby Its easy to micromanage or to hand over trust entirely, without understanding the need for due-process or safeguarding. This is a real difficulty for juicy new business. Imagine this: you’ve got a new building on the horizon, you’ve got a vision. You have millions of pounds worth of business lined up. You have no way of meeting those orders. Why?
Why have you no way of holding onto the people you hire: Why are they not able to do what is asked of them. Why are they not staying? If you’re honest You are the only constant in the equation.
.

Maybe it’s time to review what you are doing?

Perhaps, in the endeavour to be ‘different’ and new and creative, it is possible that you have thrown that baby out of the bath water? Did you, in chucking-out all the things that didn’t work for you when you worked for others, chuck out all those things that others will need in order to work for you?
.
Leadership Coaching: Sabotage
Does your team feel safe? Do they feel heard? Do they feel you have their backs? Have you contacted overtly with them? Are you paying them well? Do they actually have all they need in order to achieve what you and they expect of them…
.
Or have you set down your business head and continued to behave as if this were a startup? Are you still running what needs to be a profitable enterprise, on the worn out old elastic of good will? Are you still agreeing to this by word of mouth? Is this driven by passion and adrenaline instead of agreeing protocol and overt understanding?
.
Once you begin to grow your business never, ever fall into the trap of believing that those who join you are doing just for the love of it. This might be your life purpose. To your team or employees, this is their work and they will not enjoy it, or stay in it if you do not provide the appropriate benefits and security for them.
