On asking my clients what they most feared about engaging with career coaching, more than one responded with the words.
“ My fear was That I would be told what to do!!!!”
Nope! That REALLY isn’t gonna happen. And there are a multitude of reasons for this:
Firstly, my Mum was a head teacher, and my parents spent the first 15 years of my life telling me what to do…. That has had consequences – I have therefore spent the following 35 years in a state of rebellion. I am totally allergic to authority and thus know EXACTLY what happens when someone tells me what to do – I DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE! And thus, I am wary of telling anyone what to do!

Secondly, If I did tell you what to do, we run a huge risk of losing the point of the whole process – if I generate your answers, that means you don’t have to. If the answers are not yours, you are VERY unlikely to follow them through.

Thirdly, if we work only with my answers, we are not taking your journey. If you are paying me handsomely to support you in your career development process, why on earth would we be focusing on me?

This career coaching process is certainly collaborative. We pitch in all our ideas and opinions into the crucible to cook. Then we pull out those tasty morsels that YOU choose to try.

Then, you get to go and experiment with these things that appeal to you to find out what works for you out in the world.

Never would I tell anyone what to do – because I know that it triggers EXACTLY the opposite in me. My client base are The Disruptors, the problem solvers, the radical creatures who bring immense innovation. You lot do not need my opinion – what I teach you to do is to remember how to really hear You.
Shall we do this? It will be a whole heap of fun AND, you will genuinely generate your own answers.
