Pitfalls of Promotion
Job change reason: As you will probably know from experience, the reasons for a career change are many-fold. Sometimes there are external triggers and sometimes the trigger is internal. Whichever trigger causes a career change, rarely is the transition smooth. The bumps in this journey contains our learning, so, it is not all bad.
Whilst it is perhaps obvious that things such as impending redundancy or cultural change might be uncomfortable cause of career changes. Whilst it would seem normal that outgrowing your role, or, personal life-changes might be painful. Interestingly enough, it can be a solicited promotion that leads to the biggest challenges. There can be an element of getting precisely what you what you asked for and thus it ‘should’ be easy.
Yet with your promotion can spring all sorted of unanticipated problems. Becoming more senior is a transition in itself and whilst you may be really ready for it, are those who surround you on the same page? Keep your eye open for those who might sabotage you for their own reasons. Also, unexpected imposter syndrome can suddenly kick in, and you maybe ‘faking it to make it’ for a while. It’s up to you how long you tolerate these feelings. The role may but he what you anticipated it would be. The culture is often not as squeaky clean on the issue as it appeared when you applied. You may find that you have stumbled upon a hornets nest of under-funded services or unresolved conflict. These are all potential pitfalls of a change that you chose….
And now you are probably thinking ‘perhaps I’ll just stay where I am for a bit”. The reality is that you know that you can’t. The trick us to know where to turn to get support if you new role is not as you had anticipated. There will be nuggets of gold in this transition, if only you know where to find them. Whatever your job change reason, If you can handle the changes deftly then, you will only gain from the process.
