Leadership

Leadership according to Wikipedia is:

“Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to “lead” or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations.”

and yet leadership is way more complex than that. Simultaneously leadership is way more simple than the above definition too. If you do something, and people choose to do it with you, then you are leading. If you are leading then you are a leader. If you can persuade others that your perspective is that one they want and need, then you are leading them.

You do not need a mandate to be a leader: You do not need a job title or an election or a certain financial status. You do not need permission to lead other than by those who choose to follow you.

Whilst I struggle to write this, Trump is a leader. I never said he was a good leader, but he did persuade enough Americans to vote for him in order that he gained power. He was leading well before he was elected president. I know, ‘never bring politics into coaching work’ but really. I am only human after all! That must be one charismatic personality to persuade so many individuals to follow his lead.

I suppose this means that good leadership, brings with it, ethical and moral responsibilities. I’m my youth I certainly led more that a few people down some wrong paths with me. Now I am so old and wise, I’m not sure I would be happy to do that today. I see the wider consequences of action. I bring greater awareness of contextual outcome. I bring a sense of self that wishes to empower others, not have power-over them.

I am interested in leadership based in collaboration and communication and celebration of each other’s strengths and differences. Top-down leadership, “being the biggest chimp in the room”, is just not my way. I’d be interested to know how you see leadership…
