Career Coaching: What will people think if I leave?

Career Coaching: What will people think if I leave?

.

Do you want a really honest answer to this question? Because, in my experience when you choose to leave a role, a sector or an organisation, people rarely notice at all….
.
I know – there’s an existential crisis moment – if I leave and nobody notices, was I ever there at all?! And, this is just your ego having a little panic. The facts are you were there, and you probably did some good stuff. Now you’re choosing to leave, and the sky won’t fall in. Better to have a small, temporary ego-death and find good abs satisfying work than to body swerve it and be stuck forever in a place that no longer works for you.
.
The reaction you might encounter from others is criticism – and I bet that was exactly what you didn’t want to hear. However, take a look through this lease, and you might feel like it has its benefits…

If people are shocked or critical, this may well mean that they are envious of your courage. It may well mean that they are thoroughly threatened by toy choice because it brings them close to the edge of discomfort where they may begin to realise that this is what they want too….
.
And the prospect is terrifying (to them), and thus they may well launch into your decision instead of owning their emotions.
So, in this case, you could choose to see this as a positive reaction – they too know (very deep down!) that this decision has weight to it, and that might just mean that you are doing the right thing in the circumstances. Some may indeed congratulate you – and that two is a win.
So, there is no “bad reaction” to you choosing to change your career, role or sector? It’s entirely up to you – who knew???!

Now let’s work on your exit strategy, shall we?

Then you know why you are leaving and what you desire from the next bit, and how you will get there.
