Well Supported Career Change — I WILL Hold you as you transition
I was instructed when I trained as a coach that I ‘should never create a dependency’ between a client and myself in my new practice — and rightly so.
.
However, I may (?) have taken that a little too far? Now I know:
.
“There”s nothing quite as good as “Accountability” with the very person who was with you when your career birthed. We both KNOW this body of work SO well that the next steps just roll out before us.”
— Over a decade ago Myself and a career coachee took a glorious deep-dive together. Then, after 6 coaching Sessions, I resolutely rounded everything off and packed her off to take her thing out into the business world. — which she very elegantly did AND, a good two years later, we met through another opportunity and she took me aside and said these words:
.
“ you and I did some fabulous work together and I gained SO much clarity… but… I couldn’t help but feel just a little ‘dropped’ at the end of those sessions. I think it would have helped to know I could come back to you if I needed. We had something unique – you are the only other person who had sight of my vision”
My jaw literally fell open — I had no idea that I had created this division. I had been so focused on empowering her to be sovereign and free, I had totally forgotten to honour the privilege of witnessing the birth of a new and beautiful thing with the offer of ongoing support if needed. I was like a midwife who swaddled the new baby, handed it to a new mum, turned on my heels and walked out of the door. Very few people with a new-born flourish in total isolation!
Well Supported Career Change
And it is likewise with a new career or business – A slow withdrawal. Good signposting to the appropriate survices, hints, guidance, problem solving together.
.
All three things I offer now. Never mandatory, always on offer.
