Career Coaching: Workaholic. So,  how’s your ‘responsible workaholic”? Just asking because mine has been in full flow during the last 18 months…I have taken myself to the wall and beyond several times and now this needs to stop. And, my question was not an insult. The “Responsible Workaholic” is a personality type named in Karlah’s Process Model.  This can be very useful information when you own it. This type shows up as responsible, diligent, working to a very high standard. The perfect employee, the perfectly reasonable boss, until the stress is on.

And let’s face it, for all of us the stress HAS been on!

Career Coaching: Workaholic

When stressed this perfectly well-meaning individual begins to be strongly driven by the Be Perfect Driver.  The more stressed these individuals are, the harder they work and the faster they run as if by sheer force of will they can make things work. When they can’t make things effective, they simply run harder and faster on the Hamster wheel of life. They become less effective, chronically fatigued, and downright grumpy.

That’s me that is. And do you know what the trick is? It’s literally to Stop It? Even if it’s for half an hour. To take the time to step away from the coal face — I get it. It’s terrifying to stop. Your workaholic facet has been deluding you into believing that she is keeping you safe. And, if you take a step back, zoom out and look at the bigger picture, like me, you might be forced to admit that It Is Not Working.

Now I have an even bigger ask of you. Now I’d like you to schedule in some regular reflective time: Half an hour, a couple of times a week. They don’t even need to be ‘still’ times (I’m guessing daily hour-long meditation might be your idea of hell?) so perhaps create these spaces and use them to journal, to go for a run, to do some gardening, or to walk in green space…. The important thing is to REGULARLY step back from the coal face & this way you can become sustainable.

It’s REALLY hard coming back from Burnout. Maybe if you are going to be “responsible”, that responsibility lies with not letting yourself get there in the first place…
